Bakewell itself is a pretty, bustling market town, located on the banks of the meandering river Wye and dating back to medieval times. With an imposing Saxon church and historic 5 arch medieval bridge and conservation area, Bakewell is one of the most popular towns in the Peak District, offering a range of shops, galleries, cafes, pubs and restaurants, and provides an ideal base from which to explore this beautiful part of the UK.
The local area is well served for cycling enthusiasts – Bakewell lies at the start of the Monsal Trail, one of 3 car-free walking/cycling trails in this part of the Peak District. Cycle hire, including e-bikes, is available at the Hassop Station bookshop and café, a short distance along the trail from Bakewell, where parking is free and which also serves excellent food with a large sun terrace overlooking the trail for enjoying outside refreshments.
Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are both only a short distance from Bakewell, and the many Peak District villages, often with their own fascinating history, are all worth a visit, especially during the summer months when you can witness the Derbyshire tradition of well dressing!
The natural beauty of the Peak District landscape and all it can offer is world renowned, with much of it only a short drive from Bakewell. The rolling limestone hills of the White Peak, and the dramatic moorlands and gritstone edges of the Dark Peak provide endless opportunities for exploring, whether on foot, via the extensive network of public footpaths and open access land, or by bicycle, bus or car.
